Celebrity Sunday: Leonardo DiCaprio

It is hard to ignore his influence and after his performance last night on Saturday Night Live, I had to dedicate this Celebrity Sunday to Leonardo DiCaprio. Leo broke onto the scene in 1991 and ever since has been a style icon, molding his fashion as the years passed.

Notice...
He has starred in some of the highest grossing films in Hollywood history and won many awards for it (still working on that Oscar though). His most recent roles in Wolfe on Wall Street and The Great Gatsby have inspired style movements; waves of blogs offering "Dress like Wolf on Wall Street" and the Brooks Brothers Gatsby Collection respectively.

...the...
Something about his style over the years exudes a classy timelessness that you don't see very often, and has allowed him to stay more than relevant in the film industry, which is most notable in that he always seems to be starring in a hit movie every year. You'll see him in the pages of GQ, Esquire, People, insert notable publication here, he is a star that doesn't seem to be dwindling anytime soon.

...EVOLUTION!

Saturday Spotlight: Miansai

The devil is the in details as they say, and this is truest when it comes to fashion. The place where details are most easily improved is in the accessory department; staying with a trend or adding some color to your wardrobe by getting a new watch makes more sense than buying a new shirt or shirt. The company we'll be spotlighting today goes by the name Miansai, and they deal in just that, the accessories.

Judging by the name, you'd think Miansai is a company based out of the Far East specializing in cheaply made goods made by under paid workers. In reality, this company is based in Miami, FL and started in 2008 specializing in hand-made, high-quality accessories such as wallets and watches. The entire process from design to manufacturing is done in house and are comprised of the finest materials available. For example, their watches feature Japanese movements, Swiss quartz, and Italian leather all assembled in the US. Miansai even offers a customization ability on one of their more popular bracelet products.

M1 Hunter: $385

The company is still in its growth stage with only 30 craftsman on hand, but I anticipate a major spurt within the next year. My reasoning: the design of their products will grab anyone's attention, and the quality will keep the customers loyal to such a great brand. Not to mention, the price point that they offer is just the right mix of luxe and affordability, oh and don't forget, MADE IN THE USA!

Hook Bracelet: $145

Visit Miansai's page and checkout what they offer, you won't be disappointed. Check in daily for more fashion advice and next Saturday for another great company!

Friday Faux Pas: Matchy Matchy

Simplicity and consistency are always a safe bet in style, classics look just as good (if not better) than the latest trend. But where this train leaves the tracks is when you try to match colors and pattern and fabrics in effort to "match". I have dealt with countless customers asking for a tie that matches their sport coat or a sport coat that matches the color of a specific shirts; on the outside, I retain my typical calm demeanor, but underneath I wanted to shake these people!

I have erred in the ways of matching once and I learned my lesson immediately, never committing the crime again. Psychologically, you want to put together a seamless outfit, so the effort is there but it won't be conveyed to the people who see it. If you're going to match the color, change up the pattern or the fabric. If the fabric is the same, change the color or the pattern. Never match the pattern though, no combination of fabric or color will save you on this one.

Here are a couple rules that I go by to avoid being all "matchy matchy":

  1. Your tie and pocket square should be different fabrics.
  2. Plaid suit or sport coat? Plain shirt and tie.
  3. Stripes on stripes is okay when they are oriented differently.
  4. Two corduroys don't make a right...unless they are of different color and amplitude.
  5. Going tonal? Make the colors different.
  6. Lots of texture helps to prevent matching.
  7. Canadian tuxedos are OK now, just make sure the denims are different.
Do any of these outfits "match"? NO, but they are seamless and eye-catching.

These are just a couple of my rules, if you have any more, please leave a comment below! Check in daily for more fashion advice and next Friday for more fashion faux pas!
