Tech Time: Google x NYFW

September 6, 2016

With NYFW just around the corner, the parent company of Google, Alphabet, has been making some serious moves into the fashion world. A few weeks ago, the company made announcements that they would be running promotions and initiatives throughout the week to add some interactivity to the event as well as some much needed interest for those on the outside looking in. Since their inception, Google has been about connecting people to the rest of the world; this effort aims to connect those not on the RSVP list to the new looks from all the shows and and explore the world of NYFW on their terms. And just this week, they have taken things a step further to make the looks shopable, that is that the images you see as part of this curated delivery will have links and direct-to-cart checkout features. Apps already exist with this functionality such as LIKEtoKNOW.it and Polyvore, but the scale of this coverage has never been seen before and should make for one of the most influential fashion week's to date. I'm even more excited about the prospects of this same technology being applied to later events, most specifically the Men's Weeks.

I see you Google! Keep taking over the world, one task at a time. Let me hear your thoughts below!

For most, what you wear on your wrist has stayed relatively the same, barring the most recent disruption to that trend with the advent of the smart watch. But ultimately, a watch stands for more than just time keeping or being another peripheral technology, they are symbolic of the wearer and what they do, similar in a way to how shoes are described by Forrest Gump. Different aesthetics, weather it be size, function, or color determine the character of a watch and reflect on the person wearing it.

But one thing remains fairly constant amongst watches, in that the overwhelming majority of them are some variation of the 12-hour dial, going around twice in one day and allowing the telling of time to the exact minute and second. But you have a phone for that, and a good majority of us wearing watches will still look at our phones for the time. So comes the question of why you still need a watch?

Wundrwatch looks to address that question, a new product whose Kickstarter campaign just launched today. This 24-hour, one-hand watch doesn't show you the exact time, but rather a general idea of what time it is (within 5 minutes or so). Their goal isn't to have you monitor the time to the second, but to appreciate the fact that there are only 24 hours in a day that need to be taken advantage of. The watch comes in silver with a white face or black on black, and can be paired with their beautiful tan suede strap or a sporty nato band, and the first 10 supporters of the campaign will get one their very own for free. Today is the official launch of the Wundrwatch fundraising, so get behind this great product and hopefully grab yourself a new time piece.

Remember the fact that watches are symbolic, they can stand for something much more than just keeping time. In this case, it can remind us that we need to make the most of the time we have, not just keep track of it.

Tech Time: nuTonomy

August 25, 2016

With current automotive safety trends hinting at a future with less reliance on the driver and features like lane assist, front-side collision prevention, active cruise control, and parallel park assist, its almost as if the driver doesn't need to be there. Major players in the tech world, like Uber and Google have been pioneering the robotics necessary to to pull off a truly driverless car, but it seems that a dark horse has jumped on the scene as of today. This morning, nuTonomy launched a fleet of self-driving vehicles to act as taxis in Singapore, and it seems that they have gained the upper hand in what Karl Lagnemma (CEO of nuTonomy) says is multi-trillion dollar industry. The service is paired with an app similar to Uber or Lyft and users can order their all-electric Renault or Mitsubishi ride to pick them up. It should be said that the service so far is only made up of 6 vehicles and operates on a 2.6 square mile area just outside of the busier parts of Singapore. Definitely more to come from this exciting jump forward in the automation of automotive and something to keep an eye on!

Would you get in a nuTonomy car? Chime in below!
